Dangerous Toys

Toys can come in all different shapes, sizes and styles.  So how do you choose the perfect toy for your best friend?  As a pet ow
ner you need to be cautious when you offer toys to your companion.  Below is a listing of potential hazards that you may come across:

  • Sticks & Bones- these can splinter and cause choking and vomiting.  They can potentially perforate the throat, mouth or intestine.  If  bones are hard enough they can easily damage teeth.

  • Soft latex toys-these can be easily shredded.  If the soft toy has a squeaker within it, it can easily be swallowed or cause choking.
  • Superballs-if ingested these can cause intestinal obstruction.  Tennis balls or handballs may be too small and can be a choking hazards.
  • Towels, socks, underwear and other materials-these household items can be swallowed causing intestinal obstruction.
  • Rocks-can be chewed on and can cause broken teeth and intestinal obstruction if swallowed.
  • Pet Rawhides-if swallowed can cause intestinal obstruction
  • Plastic bags-cats enjoy hiding in and can get their head stuck in the handles and may panic causing choking or suffocation.
  • String, Yarn, Feathers & Rubber bands-can be swallowed whole with the possibility of lodging in the intestinal tract and causing blockage.  If any of these items are partially swallowed they can result in sever problems.  For example, one end of the string can wrap around the cat's tongue while the rest of the string is swallowed.
  • Be aware of sharp objects that can cut skin, feet, eyes or ears.
